A Robust User Authentication Scheme for Multi-Server Environment Using Smart Cards

Remote user authentication is a very important ingredient procedure for the network system service to authenticate whether a remote user is legal through any insecure channel. Recently, Hsiang-Shih proposed a dynamic ID based remote user authentication scheme for multi-server environment as an improved scheme over Liao and Wang’s scheme, and asserted that their scheme can escape from masquerade attack, server spoofing attack, etc. In this paper, we show that Hsiang and Shih’s scheme still suffers from the insider's attack and masquerade attack. To mend the problem, we offer a procedure to improve HsiangShih’s scheme. Our scheme is suitable for applications with higher security requirement.
